| Christian Youth Group: A Hope For The Future |
|
Youth
ministry and participation in a Christian
youth group provide the ability for Christian youth to be trained on
how to interact with their peers. This is an essential part of providing
support for the younger generation of Christians. Many kids really don't feel
comfortable approaching older leaders in the church for guidance in real life
or spiritual issues, but they will reach out to people their own age or those
that are seen in the same general age group. This provides a huge opportunity
for youth ministry right within your own community or in missionary work
throughout the world.
Youth
workers may be in high school or college, or they may be younger professionals
that are reaching out to the youth in a church ministry or community based
program. Often youth workers that have graduated from a college or university
may have experience and degrees in Social Work, Education, Religious Education,
Theology, Counseling, Psychology or other related fields. Many youth leaders
and workers are students that are planning to enter these types of fields as
their profession, or those that have a true love of working with the young
people of their community.
A
Christian youth group can provide a variety of resources for youth workers,
whether it's through a bible study group, church, or community, depending on
where the youth lives. Typically in most church organizations there will be one
or more youth leaders or youth ministers that work with a variety of different
kids. Some youth leaders may focus in on sports, nutrition and learning to be
part of a team while others may use singing, theatre or literature to help
their group members learn about living and working as part of the community.
Some
youth leaders or youth ministers may have the ability and support of their
church organizations to plan other types of events for the kids in the
community to get involved in. This can include extracurricular types of sports
and learning activities, hiking and camping, field trips to religious or
cultural events or even helping out other charities and organizations within
the community or in a community in need. Youth missions to other areas of
the country or even internationally are also typically coordinated and
organized by youth leaders with support of parents and church officials and
leaders.
Of
course the focus with youth leaders and youth workers is also to tend to the
spiritual needs of the young people in their groups. This often includes
involving the youth in bible study classes that may occur before, during or
after the group activities. Often for most youth leaders there is also a
counseling component where the group members or their friends can access the
youth leader to talk privately about personal issues, lifestyle choices or even
problems that may be occurring in the family or for the individual youth. Many
youth workers are called upon to be advocates for kids in crisis or for
particular programs that youth would benefit from having in a particular
community or area.
Youth
workers that are supporting Christian youth groups will also have to deal with
very challenging issues as well. These issues can include drug or alcohol
abuse, sexual abuse, domestic or family violence as well as homeless and
indigent children and families. Having a strong connection and network with the
other agencies available in the community to assist the child or youth is also
a definite asset for these types of workers. The youth worker can also assist
with temporary placement and support of runaways or children that have become
involved with the juvenile justice system.
