There’s a Wealth of Symbolism behind Celtic Wedding Rings
For anyone with Scottish or Irish ancestry, Celtic arts and their underlying symbolism hold a special fascination. This feeling of being drawn to one's ancestral culture is the reason that many couples opt for Celtic wedding rings, both as a symbol of their endless love and as a celebration of their family and their enduring culture. Celtic knot symbols first started appearing around 450 A.D. Even if you've descended from Celtic lineage, you may not know the significance in all of the knots and design motifs behind Celtic wedding rings.

In Celtic jewelry, the Celtic knot symbol is commonly known as the endless knot or even the mystic knot because it seemingly has no beginning or ending. The Celts thought that the knot could be a powerful symbol to ward off sickness or bad luck and thus wore it as jewelry, wove it into the patterns in their cloth, and placed it in their homes. To a modern mind, these knots symbolize the endless cycle of life and death present in the natural world, and it may have also had this significance to the ancient Celts. Many modern religious and spiritual symbols are common among the world's diverse cultures and religions.

For instance, the Trinity is a common motif in Celtic knots, as well as in the symbol known as the triqueta, or the triskelion. Although Ireland is mostly Catholic now, in the pre-Christian era, the tri-lobed or three-sided symbol does not stand just for the Catholic Trinity, but possibly incorporates these different trios of symbolic meanings: Spirit, Mind, Body; Mother, Father, Child; Past, Present, Future; or even, Mother, Maiden, Crone. It is also strongly believed that the Trinity stood for phases of the moon, often associated with the Great Mother, the lunar goddess who had three faces during the corresponding phases of the moon. In addition to the Great Mother, the Celtic Trinity symbol may also represent the three Bridgits. Bridgit is a goddess with three different aspects (faces) that stand for Art, Healing, and Metalsmithing. The triqueta is often seen with a circle around it, which stands for infinity. The circle shape of the ring also symbolizes protection and unity with the divine, so there are many meanings underlying the gift of Celtic wedding rings.

There are many variations of the Trinity symbol in Celtic wedding rings, from a Trinity knot filigree ring, to a design like a puzzle ring with interlocking bands that can be taken apart but never completely separated. The Triskelion symbol is another example of Celtic symbols with three parts. But, three is not the only number that figures prominently in Celtic designs. The Celtic Quarternary knot has many meanings, depending on which area and time period you are examining. The meanings for this knot even vary from artisan to artisan. The number five also crops up in Celtic knot designs, including the famous Celtic Five Fold, which has numerous symbolic meanings, as well as an association with the Celtic Fifth Element.

If you are planning to marry using Celtic wedding bands, then it's a good idea to devote a little time to research so that you are picking out rings that carry the right symbolic message for your new adventure into marriage. There's a wealth of old-world lore associated with all Celtic artwork and design. Learning about it while researching which wedding rings to buy might even open up a new world for you, the timeless world of the Celts, which is one of the greatest and most influential of all the world's cultures. Show your pride in your Celtic heritage by choosing Celtic wedding rings to help celebrate that very special day.
