| Island Lighting Focuses on the Task at Hand |
|
Island
lighting has become an important feature of modern homes. It can be found in the garage, the workroom,
the kitchen or in any room that has a focused area of activity. It provides all the necessary overhead light
to safely and properly carry out a task.
This style of lighting is most commonly seen in the kitchen. Modern kitchens have again become activity
centers and guests as well as family members often gather there. A standalone counter has now mostly replaced
the large wooden table of yesteryear as the preferred work spot and food
preparation area. Whether making dinner,
finishing a school science project or just visiting with friends over coffee
this area needs good light. The
choice of lights depends on the room decoration, size and shape of the area to
be lit and the activity that takes place there.
Clearly, the style and look of a garage workbench calls for a simple
industrial design, while a kitchen with a French country decor would need
something quite a bit more decorative and ornate. Whatever the design, it is well worth
searching through the vast array of possibilities available. Island
lighting fixtures or luminaires for the kitchen may be used alone or as part of
a more elaborate unit. The countertop
island could have a cutting board or stainless steel surface with a working
stove or grill attached. The overhead
unit might have an exhaust fan and a pot rack.
These could be combined with some adjustable arm spotlights and a row of
pendant halogen lamps with stainless steel hoods. In contrast, another kitchen could have a
simple tiled countertop with a single pendant fluorescent luminaire covered by
a dome of opal glass and controlled by a dimmer. This hanging element might provide most of
the illumination in that kitchen’s design.
The dimmer would be able to control the amount of light and set the
visual mood of the room. In the family
room, an ornate steel and stained glass billiard light would be perfect,
suspended low over a pool table. The
variety of themes and elements to match them is endless. The
types of lamps or light bulbs used, fixtures, shades and their materials have
an important effect upon the quality and quantity of light in a room. For a real work area where the light must
resemble daylight, a lamp that gives a strong white light is the best choice. A luminaire that directs the light without
diffusing it or changing its color should also be considered. In a situation where the decorative aspects
are more important and no close work or reading is to be done, the choice is
more relaxed. The color of the lamp’s
light should complement the room decoration.
This can be achieved by using shades that blend with the color scheme
and diffuse the light well. Different
materials alter the way we perceive things.
A regular bare incandescent bulb dangling from a wire seems harsh. Cover it with a red silk shade or place it
inside a blue glass globe and the room is suddenly transformed. Depending on the choices made, island
lighting can make a kitchen take on the aspect of a working galley or
a friendly neighborhood pub, whatever fits the situation. Some
styles of lights have hardware that allows them to be adjusted (raised and
lowered and in some cases turned). There
are even units which have fully adjustable arms and lights. Fixtures using incandescent, halogen,
fluorescent and LEDs are easy to find.
