What do you think would be required of you if you wanted to become a foster parent? Most people assume that they must have a home, a job and some ability to demonstrate they are capable of taking care of a child. This is all true of course. However, there are some more banal requirements of foster parents as well. For example, a foster parent’s home must pass certain safety tests and meet certain standards before the parents will be approved to provide foster care. Getting fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and first aid kits are just some of the things that prospective parents have to do before they can become licensed to provide care.
The most important requirements to become a foster parent are, of course, those related to your ability to provide a safe and nurturing home to children who are not your own. The specific requirements related to this vary from state to state. However, they all include basic things like you must be a minimum age (18 in some places, 25 in others) and have a formal education (usually a high school diploma or a GED). If you are applying as a married couple then you need to have been married for a certain length of time (often two years) to show that you are stable together. Becoming a foster parent requires that you fill out an application form that addresses these types of issues.
Once your application has received its initial approval, you will meet with a representative from the foster care agency. This is usually the time when home visits are conducted to ensure what you said on your application is true. These visits will include interviews with you to learn why you want to be a foster parent, what your expectations of the experience are and what type of parent you plan to be. These visits essentially elaborate upon the information on the initial application and are designed to make sure you really are financially and emotionally fit to be a foster parent.
Once you have gone through this process, however, you will need to get down to the more banal details of becoming a foster parent. You will receive a checklist of things that are expected from your home. Your home must meet every requirement on the checklist in order to pass approval from the state for you to start providing foster care services in your home. Most of the items on the list are things that you may already have in your home. Fire extinguishers and first aid kits are things that you should have as a safety precaution especially when you have kids in the house. If you don’t already have these things then you would need to invest in them at this time during the foster care process.
Not all the items on the list are going to be common items like fire extinguishers though. You will also need to have some security measures in place that you might not already have in your home. For example, many foster children are on medication so it is important you have a locked box where medication can be stored and they can’t access it. You might also have to draw up a fire exit plan for your home. Although this is smart for all families to do, most families don’t have a fire plan so creating one becomes part of their foster care licensing process. These things are obviously not that difficult to put in place if you want to become a foster parent. However they are some of the more tedious tasks that prospective foster parents might not realize will be a part of the process. |
