| Coordinating Costumes for Halloween: How to Do it Right |
| We’ve all seen it: the tragedy that is a group of friends trying to pull off a theme costume and failing miserably on Halloween. And yet, more rare but infinitely more impressive is the chance to see a family, couple or group of friends rocking coordinating costumes for Halloween and looking like the coolest set in the bunch. There are some easy guidelines to follow if you want to up the ante with your Halloween costume without washing out on the big night.
If you’re coordinating a family, first consider is a popular TV or movie family. This could include something like Shrek’s family, the Simpsons, the Griffin family from Family Guy or even possibly the Skywalker clan from Star Wars. Coordinating as a family is cute, so don’t lose that sweet appeal by undermining the family aspect! When creating the outfits, keep the color palette cohesive while establishing differentiating characteristics.
Couples costumes are a bit more difficult to coordinate because they can trend toward overkill. Couples have a social imperative to up the ante and come out with something with an edge, either by showcasing their relationship style, or by being a witty and clever modern commentary. For example, one of the more popular couple outfits during the 2008 election was Sarah Palin and a moose. That being said, romance tends not to fall flat either, and a Prince and Princess will always have a timeless quality. Teenagers can pull this combination off especially well, while for an older couple it seems a little more wry. A Princess and a Frog can seem more clever to an older party audience.
Finally, it can be entertaining to coordinate a group of friends to dress according to a specific theme. But be careful – it’s easy to go wrong. If the theme looks ill conceived and poorly executed, it will garner more confusion than admiration. Think of teams, groups or bands that have multiple people, like the cast of Lost or the Scooby Doo team. Favorite TV shows are always a great source of inspiration, and even everyday hobbies or activities can make great costumes. One of the more successful examples of this is the contents of a refrigerator, from a carton of milk to soda to stale cheese, with the fridge trailing somewhere behind. At a party, these characters appear an obvious set even while circulating the room.
No matter how you decide to coordinate costumes for Halloween, make sure to put sincere thought and effort into the process. The easiest way to look foolish is to slap together a careless outfit and spend the rest of your night trying to explain it to skeptical friends at an otherwise entertaining event. Instead, take some time and find the perfect ensemble to wear alongside your family, significant other, or friends.
